North Sea Yacht Race 4th July 2008

North Sea Yacht Race

The North Sea Race is Scarborough Yacht Club’s Blue Ribbon event, taking place annually in July.  The course is from Scarborough to Ijmuiden, Holland, a distance of around 210 nautical miles, a good test of seamanship, where competitors encounter the rigours of the North Sea, with a few oil rigs thrown in to dodge for good measure.

Thousands of spectators watch the spectacular start from the East Pier, which is featured on local radio and television.  The event is an open race with between 20 – 25 yachts taking part. All competitors are very welcome and come from up and down the North East coast to enjoy the hospitality of the Club prior to the start.

Once again we are very pleased to announce the continued sponsorship of Boyes Stores, where any manner of merchandise can be purchased at bargain prices!!

The notice of race and entrance forms will be available on the web site or from the Club in due course. Race entry form download here.

Once the Race is over, competitors travel through the North Sea canal to Amsterdam, to sample the atmosphere of the City, which boasts magnificent churches and museums!

Perhaps the next port of call could be Vollandam for lunch the following day, before moving on to Hoorn for the Race Sponsor’s reception and dinner, followed by the prize giving and entertainment on Tuesday evening.  Truly a night not to be missed.

After this some competitors set off to make the return passage home, but most continue on to sample the delights and charm of the Dutch inland sea, lakes and waterways, all of which offer new challenges, varied and different places to visit, with hospitality and a welcome you will never forget.  This, as much as the Race, is probably the reason why competitors return year after year.

Navigational Warning!

Quite obviously no attempt should be made to navigate these waters without the appropriate charts.  The Dutch local charts are recommended, which can be obtained in folio form, covering all areas from our local chandlers, Scarborough Marine Engineers.
