The Scarborough Fleet Review..... Heavyweight Division

Ruffian

Gin & Tonic anyone?

We were looking for a yacht which would give us speed, comfort and safety to do the Round Britain & Ireland Two handed race, that boat was Ruffian, a Sigma 36 and the exhilaration experienced during our first passage bringing her home from the Shetland Islands has never subsided. She proved her worth in arduous conditions during that race, and last year we achieved our greatest success to date in the Azores & Back Race where we gained 1st place on the outward leg, 4th on the return which gave us an overall position of 2nd in Class.  Our next project is the BMW Round Ireland Race in the two handed class.

Owned by Pete McIntyre

Revenge

Revenge is a Sigma 33 and is owned by Club Vice-Commodore, Alan Smith. She is from the drawing board of the very successful designer, David Thomas. A very popular one design cruiser/racer, renouned for their good turn of speed and sea keeping abilities, and is equally at home 'around the cans' or offshore sailing.

Dash

Wed wine for me please

Dash, a Sadler 34, once owned by Yachting Monthly editor, Andrew Bray is now owned by Martin Donnelly who has been a Club member since 1985. Martin first sailed into Scarborough in 1972 in a Fireball dinghy from Filey and despite this achievement, promptly received a rollicking from the then commodore D.W.Dearden for dripping water all over the polished wood floor!

Among Martin's many credits are that he came third in the single handed round Malta race, has competed in three Triangle races, too many North Sea races to remember and one transatlantic under his belt. The plans for the future are to cruise the West coast of South America with slow, slow days and fast nights!

Swan Shot

The second most beautiful yacht in Scarborough!

The owner of Swan Shot, a Swan 37 is Paul Wilkinson and although he has only been sailing for 13yrs he has packed a lot of miles into that time. In their last boat, Lady Helen, a Traspac49 they crossed the Atlantic from Fort Lauderdale to Lagos in Portugal via the Azores and Bermuda, before extensively cruising in the Med. returning to Spain, where Julie gave birth to their daughter Alice before continuing up the Atlantic coast and back home to Scarborough and work!!

They have done 6 North Sea Races in Swan Shot, cruised the Dutch Inland waters and now plan to holiday on Scotland’s West coast via the Caledonian Canal before moving on to the Faeroes or Norway.

Starry Night

Yes Barbara!

Starry Night owners, Geoff and Barbara Hill are long standing club members with Geoff being a Club Trustee and Honorary Commodore. Starry, as she is known, is a Starlight 30 and has been a part of the Scarborough sailing scene for many years.

Vado

Vado, an Aphrodite 29 is owned by the Club Commodore Steve Russell and is usually somewhere at the top of the fleet when racing. Steve and his wife Win previously owned Tone Deaf, a Sonata but decided to go for a larger yacht to compete in the club’s North Sea race and to have a little more room when cruising.

Phansey That

The newest addition to the fleet is ‘Phansey That’ owned by Dennis House, a Hanse 321, built in Germany she was bought new from the boat show and Dennis sailed her back to Scarborough at the beginning of last year.

As well as being a regular North Sea competitor and bay racer, Dennis is a seasoned campaigner on the two handed circuit and has taken part in many Triangle races which run from Torquay – Kinsale – Treguier and back to Torquay a distance of 620 miles.

Chansa

Boyes Stores for all manner of merchandise at bargan prices!

Chansa, owned by Andrew Boyes, is a Hanse 291 - the model which launched the Hanse yard in the early 1990's using the moulds from the earlier Swedish Aphrodite 291. Chansa was built in 1994 and is one of only a handful of this model sold into the British Isles although a large number were sold on the Continent.

We first came across Hanse at the 2000 Southampton boat show when they were launching the updated version, the 301, which seemed to offer great value for money with a reputation for  excellent sailing qualities. Some commentators seemed to prefer the original 291, we did a bit of research on the internet, found Chansa in Largs in early 2001 and decided she was the boat for us.

It was something of a step into the unknown for us but we have absolutely no regrets, as the surveyor told us "she's a fine wee boat," she sails well - even with a bunch of girls on board - and must have been an inspired choice when the Commodore and another club member have been over to the Continent and both bought the same model!

Chansa provides me with all the excitement I can handle - having sailed her back from Holland - just me and 4 ladies - need I say more!

Firefly

Relax and enjoy retirement

Firefly, a Beneteau First 305, owned by John Rose is presently based in Menorca. John has been sailing for about fifty years and with the Scarborough Club since the 1950’s. He had a share with his father in ‘Elusive Lady’ before moving on to’ Premiere Cru’ another ‘First’. Enjoying his retirement he has sailed all around the British Isles and calling off at all ports in France, Portugal and Spain on his way to Corsica and Sardinia, the future plans for more cruising in the Med sounds idyllic

1/4 Past Stormy

¼ Past Stormy is a superbly built Atlanta 28 and is a real credit to her builders/owners, Phil and Jayne Nichols. She was bought as an unfinished project or perhaps you should say unstarted project and after 2 ½ years of relentless effort and hard labour was finally commissioned in June 2006. She was built to our own plans and specifications, as this was the third project in boat building we had under taken, our plans are to enjoy her to the full and we hope to cruise to Scotland and in Holland, says Phil.

Starshine

Starshine, an Albin Vega and now owned by Bob Briggs has had two previous owners and was first called Belemnite the first owner purchased her new and sailed her back to Southampton from Sweden the second owner renamed her Starshine and sailed her to France and the Scilley Isles on a number of occasions and raced her around “The Island” several times coming second in 1992 the year I bought her. I still have the original 1992 Vega Association magazine with the editorial Around the Island with Starshine.

Bob an experianced sailor has been sailing in Scarborough for over 25 yrs. And has visited many interesting and varied places including:  Bass Rock, North Berwick, Dunbar, Eyemouth, Berwick on Tweed, Farne Islands, Blyth, Newcastle, Sunderland, Seaham, Hartlepool, Whitby. Grimsby, Lowestoft & Weymouth and abroad in The Netherlands & Dutch Friesian Islands on approx 20 separate occasions. Numerous places in the Mediterranean, Cyclades, Ionian and Gibraltar and the Straits on other yachts.

Llamudos

Upon reflection, Sod um all!

Martina

Did it cost an arm and a leg?

Sailing since they were kids, Pip Rowntree and Andy Volans have progressed from a swordfish dinghy to their Albin Vega, Martina after crewing on various local yachts. They have charted yachts in the BV Islands, Greece and Turkey and now look forward to returning to Holland with Martina. Their eventual plans are to sail around the UK and one day do the ARC.  Martina came from Denmark complete with all the instruction manuals in Swedish! Which only added to the confusion of getting to know the boat.

Blue

Proud owners Paul and Sue Bramley have sailed the East Coast and Holland, with their ‘press ganged’ crew Jessica, Ben and Bob the dog.  We are members of the Elizabethan Owners Association and Blue appears to be the only ketch build in this design.  Future destinations will somewhere warm and sunny, hopefully the Mediterranean!

Tiger Tim

Still no wind!

Tiger Tim is a Robert Tucker T31, and is owned by David King and Laurie Smith, and is constructed of ply on iron frames. They have been sailing for ten years with the last one being based in Scarborough, previously owning a yacht called Stormdancer.

2006 was their first entry in the North Sea Race where light winds prevented them from completing the course but are looking forward to a second attempt in 2007

Pisces

Pisces is a Verl 790 owned by Stan and Joyce Dufton.  The Verl 790 is quarter ton Ed Dubios design to provide an attractive boat with race winning potential and an internal volume that permits her to be fitted out as a fast passage making family cruiser.

Stan started sailing in 1958 when he bought his first boat – an enterprise dinghy.  He then built several steel yachts, the first was a Wild duck, then a Prima Ballerina followed by a Goosander.  He sailed these boats on the river Trent and Humber.  Stan then sold his yacht in 1990 and went back to dinghy sailing when he joined Filey Sailing Club. Stan fitted out Pisces after purchasing the GRP hull, and he launched her in Scarborough 5 years ago.  He has been racing her since then with his daughter Lucy.  Pisces has won a couple of flags and came second in class in the 2007 regatta.

Grautvornix

We're the one in the foreground!

Grautvornix, a Hanse 291, is owned by Steve and Alana Parker. In 2006 they purchased her from the Baltic and sailed her back to Scarborough via the Kiel Canal. Their previous yacht was Windrift (ex club Llamados) a Contessa 26 which they sailed to the Isle of Mull in 2005. Future plans for Grautvornix are to cruise around Britain competing in various Regattas on route, one day...........

Peg

Owner,Brian Aldred has been sailing  for 40 years and campaigned all around England for many years in several classes of Dinghies with a reasonable degree of success. The later years spent on windsurfers at Filey Sailing Club.

Graduating to day-boat sailing at SYC in a Fox Terrier in 1989 we did well for 4 years. Changing to a larger Boat, Jedder, a Jouet 7.60 we did several North sea races before concentrating on cruising all along the east coast and Holland.

In 2004 we purchased Peg which is a Beneteau Oceanis Clipper 311, some 9.45m long, She was manufactured in 2000 and purchased from Fox’s Ipswich after 1 previous owner. As a retired person we now spent about two months a year cruising Holland along its northern coasts and inland waters. We still cruise the UK east coast through out the rest of the year: generally covering some 2500 miles per year.

Other sailing as taken place along the west coast from Scotland to Wales, and, recently in the Caribbean. 2008’s plans are more of the same!

Katina

All aboard the Coronia, no I mean Katina

Built in 1975 Katina is a Halcyon 23 and was one of the last ones to be built. A proven sea boat, under previous ownership, she has taken part in the Club's North Sea Race but new owners William and Andrew Danby claim to be complete novices to the world of sail power and spend most of their spare weekends out gaining experience and developing their skills. William has been gaining sea time on the Coronia and is doing the RYA Day Skipper Course

Wispy Lace

Boat for sale

The owners of Wispy Lace, are Robin & Sue Scholes who have sailed in Scarborough for the last 30yrs, they have progressed from various dinghies and a Westerly 22 named Sapharies, to their very successful Moody 27.They bought Wispy Lace in Largs and sailed her to Scarborough via the Crinnan and Caledonian Canals and have sailed extensively in Holland and Belgium.

Over the years they have won many trophies racing in Scarborough and have been a class winner twice in the Club’s North Sea Race which coincidently is the same number of times they have lost their rudder on the same trip!! (Now greatly re-enforced)

Autumn Liz

Picture to follow

Having completed his Day Skipper practical 27yrs ago, travelling from Ipswich-Burnham- Queensborough-Ramsgate-Calais and back to Ipswich, Martin Gledhill bought Autumn Liz a Halcyon 23, 4 yrs ago and has spent a lot of effort restoring her to her former glory. During that time he has completed a lot of single handed sailing, visiting Whitby, Hartlepool and Sunderland and now plans to sail to the Farne Islands, Berwick and the East coast of Scotland.

Sea Lark

Sea Lark is a 1972 Twister, 28ft LOA. with a long keel and is owned by Eric and Daphne Roberts. They regard their cruising ground as Flamborough to the Farnes and their season as all-year round. They like to include an annual trip up the Tyne to Newcastle.

Daphne says 'when we bought her we were told she would look after us and so far she has, forgiving our mistakes and staying the right way up! Being a heavy displacement boat she revels in strong winds, gets in the groove and slices through the waves, we just love her'.
