The Scarborough Fleet Review..... Lightweight Division

Weird Fish

For all your Electrical requirements

After owning two SK700’s, Caldera and Skulduggery Darren Blackburn’s Isis 21, Weird Fish should prove to be a winner and is, on handicap the second fastest boat in the fleet. All Darren’s spare time is spent working Weird Fish up to speed and is starting to show dividends with improving results.

Zeris

A diamond geezer

Consistently at the top of the fleet is Zeris a Hunter Sonata owned and skippered by Brian Sizer. When not racing Brian can often be seen in the harbour mud at low tide, cleaning and polishing the under water section of the hull, it is this dedication and attention to detail to which Brian attributes his success.

Brian’s recent result in the club’s annual North Sea race, in Zeris, proves the versatility of the design.

Bee Sharp

never BEEn SHARPer !

For many years the other half of the dynamic duo in the sadly depleting Sonata fleet is Dave Turner, who like Brian is usually there or there abouts when it comes to collecting the trophies with his Sonata, Bee Sharp.

Dave's prowess  at racing does not end in Scarborough and his ventures down the coast to the Royal Yorkshire YC have proved very successful over recent years, often walking away with the top prizes in their regatta.

Shere Khan

Just do it

Bruce Temple & Karen Matthews purchased Shere Khan in September 2007, a 1987 First Class Eight, she is the third of her type to sail out of Scarborough Harbour and is a good example of this older generation sports boat.  A new kevlar main has been ordered from Hyde Sails to replace the original Dacron, which we hope will have a favourable impact on performance together with the crew training that is ongoing.  We are looking forward to doing some coastal races and camping on board!

Humdinger

Grolsh, Grolsh, Grolsh, Grolsh, Grolsh

Humdinger the first of the new breed of sports boats to join the club is owned by Glynn Simpson and is a Hunter 707, with the popularity of this class proving its ability, as it is now one of four 707’s in the club.

2Eternity

10 pints of cider please and whatever the crew wants, Eddie

2Eternity is Roger Buxton’s fifth boat since starting sailing 25yrs ago and is the 18ft Micro Gem for which Roger has high expectations for the future, hoping to compete in the Micro class championships, Nationals in Harwich, Europeans in Germany, Worlds in Poland and a Mini-Transat (one dream he wishes would go away!)

Other notable achievements are a very credible 2nd place in the Two handed round Britain and Ireland race, teaming up with the late Roger Kennedy in 1989. Probably the most hair raising scheme to date was sailing across the North Sea and back on four sheets of ply joined together in the form of a Silhouette and raising a massive £3500 for charity.

Roger joined the ranks of the sailing fraternity from being a commercial fisherman, thinking that all yachties were cravat wearing, pink gin drinking poofters, why else would I have taken up sailing he asks!

Tomahawk

Boxing day, Good Friday,Mothering Sunday, Pancake day, Sir the word you are looking for is Mayday!

We are very proud to have as an active sailing member of the club, Tom Clark our local Lifeboat Coxwain. A regular on the race course, Tom only started sailing a couple of seasons ago but has already proved his capabilities in sailing his Fox Terrier 21, Tomahawk.

Isabella

Learner driver, please keep clear!

Isabella, a Hunter Sonata, owned by Matt Atkinson and Johnny Mallory is new to the harbour in Spring 2008, brought down from Kielder Water and originally from Fort William. This is their first yacht and are looking forward to working their way through the racing field as they travel up the steep learning curve.

Free & Easy

Oh my god, whats holding the mast up!

Owner Denis Cudworth first became interested in the Freedom 21 at the 1996 boat show and after locating a hull, ended up fitting her out himself and launched her in July 1997, after keeping her on the Broads for a season he returned North, where he has sailed her to the Farne Islands, Lowestoft and his favourite cruising area, the East Cost rivers and trailer sailed her in the Western Isles, Malaig, Loch Ken and the Solway Firth. Future plans are to enjoy his time racing in Scarborough.

During 20yrs of boat ownership, from Sailfish, Crabber, Legend to a Yorkshire O D, Denis has sailed cross Channel, French Canals and in the Western Mediterranean.
